Church Windows Repair

In addition to ageing and weathering, stained glass windows can also be damaged by vandalism. The use of a storm window and a wire mesh screen can help to protect the windows. But in case of breakage, stained glass windows can be repaired.

The storm window was not enough to protect the stained glass windows on the inside of the church.
Vandalism on the storm window
The damage is quite significant. The impact on lead came usually causes a cascade of breaks.
Damage
Among the broken glasses, there are painted pieces and colored pieces.
Close-up of broken pieces
The pieces to be replaced become obvious after the stained glass window is dismantled. The intact parts are strong enough to stay together.
Dismantling of damaged stained glass pieces
Replacement glass parts are cut and fitted. The colors are chosen as closely as possible among what is available on the market today. It is possible to adjust the color using paint.

A well-executed refurbishment

After assembly, replacement of the lead frame, steel reinforcement bar and a good cleaning, these stained glass windows are back in new condition.

Pieces with a pattern are painted. It is quite easy to reproduce the patterns of these stained glass windows. Simply place the replacement glass on top of a photocopy of the broken pieces. It is recommended to keep broken parts to facilitate the reproduction work.
